about

This October 13th, Jazz-o-Tech welcomes their new school and fast-rising talents Warren Walker and Antonin Violot for new five-track EP First Name Basis, which showcases their unique take on techno jazz.

Warren Walker is a composer and producer who plays sax and synthesisers. He operates in an effervescent musical universe that is in constant flux and infuses jazz with widescreen inspirations. In both the studio and live arena he has found creative harmony with drummer Antonin Violot. They combine their forces to great effect on this debut EP which came together in organic fashion and was mostly recorded live. Its mix of electronic and acoustic instruments is a seamless fusion of different worlds and techniques that explores all new ground and is deeply emotive.

It kicks off with 'Frank' which layers up percussive lines and live, lurching drums next to melancholic piano notes. Sombre sax motifs drift way up top next to the warp-speed synths and the whole arrangement is perfectly interlaced, deep and atmospheric with thoughtful spoken words. 'Robert' nods to the late great Bob Moog. It cuts loose on deft and shuffling broken beats with muted synths, all crafted on a Moog One, doing an elegant dance up top. 'Dave,' a deep cut that rides on lush drums, with celestial piano keys ringing out in the air above. Heart-aching sax sounds layer in heavy emotions as a deep bassline moves everything along through swells of hope and quieter breakdowns.

'Hermon' is darker and heavier as samples of Hermon Mehari's trumpets - created by Walker using the Morphagene then performed using a variety of modular synth techniques - lead you through crashing hits and punchy kicks. It's a late-night sound full of intrigue and menace. Last of all, 'Elvin' samples the voice of noted John Coltrane collaborator Elvin Jones and is a jazz, jungle and techno fusion with slick breaks churning at pace beneath glowing synth modulations and bright arpeggios, a spiritual crescendo of sound that transports you to the stars.

This EP displays incredible craft and musicianship. It's a perfect fusion of jazz and techno, a seamless mix of timeless genres with spellbinding results.

Jazz-o-Tech is a label that draws on the rich heritage of two of the most visionary and experimental genes in music: jazz and techno. Taking inspiration from the freeform creative nature of those two musical worlds, artists on the label mix tradition with modernity, improvisation with experimentation, and create a new sound known as techno-jazz. Modern music needs to be ambitious. It must aim to deliver a musical message which is one step beyond what has already been heard. It must take you on a new musical journey into unknown dimensions and emotions. That is the Jazz-o-Tech mission.
